Collaboration with Urbanists – Urban Synergy: Building Better Cities in Indonesia, Sumedang Regency

Urban areas in Indonesia, including Sumedang Regency, are currently facing increasingly complex challenges due to rapid urbanization, disaster risks, socio-economic disparities, and environmental degradation. The Jatinangor area, as a strategic region within Sumedang, has undergone significant transformation from a green zone into a dense urban area filled with temporary housing, apartments, and educational institutions. This transformation has led to a reduction in green open spaces, a decline in environmental quality, and a clean water crisis due to the limited coverage of public water utility services (PDAM) and groundwater pollution.

In facing these conditions, an integrated and sustainable urban development approach is required through the implementation of resilient city and smart city concepts to create an area that is resilient, adaptive, and livable.

Collaborative Program for Urban Challenges

To address the complex challenges of urban development, a collaborative program is needed to bridge various stakeholders. This program aims to build a cross-sectoral collaboration platform involving government, private sector, academia, and the community to formulate and develop innovative solutions for urban resilience and sustainability. Through a research-based approach and best practices, the program will encourage the emergence of strategic ideas that can be implemented to tackle issues such as disaster vulnerability and environmental pressures.

In addition, the program will facilitate knowledge and experience exchange through interactive discussions and case studies, aiming to support the creation of impactful policies and collaborative actions for the development of resilient and sustainable cities.

Vision for Indonesia

With this cross-sectoral collaboration, the vision for Indonesia is to establish an ecosystem for urban development that is more inclusive, adaptive, and sustainable. Through synergy between government, the private sector, academia, and local communities, urban challenges can be addressed more holistically and participatively. This collaboration is expected to produce data- and research-based policies, stimulate strategic contributions from businesses through impactful CSR initiatives, enrich academic research with local case studies, and empower communities to become active parts of the solution. Ultimately, this collaboration serves as the foundation for realizing Indonesian cities that are disaster-resilient, environmentally friendly, and focused on sustainable community well-being.
